Longing for Maine
February 18th, 2008
I guess these cold winter days have me thinking and wishing for summer. I always spend a portion of my summer in northern Maine. I grew up there and didn’t particularly like the winters, but you can’t beat the summers. Sunrise around 4:00am and sunset around 9:00pm. I grew up the daughter of a Baptist Pastor and we always lived in parsonages, so my parents never owned a home until my dad retired 15 years ago. But back in the 1960’s my dad and grandpa split the cost of a lot on a lake in northern Maine. They paid all of $300 for this plot of land never knowing if the dreamed of cottage would come to fruition. In the spring of 1970 my grandpa, a farmer in Aroostook County Maine, cut down logs from the back end of the farm for my dad to build a log cabin on our piece of land on the lake. Thirty Eight years later it’s still the only cottage on that lake and the only place I consider home. Today as I look out at the blowing snow with -37 degree wind chill, I long for July on the lake fishing for trout, watching the moose and the bear, and laying outside in the hammock reading a book. What are you dreaming about today?
