Family
October 19th, 2008
I spent this weekend near Harrisburg, Pa visiting my brother. I hadn’t seen him in 2 years and I knew I was overdue for a visit. I told him I wanted to follow him around and do what he normally does in the course of a weekend, so we shot pool with a friend of his, went to Saturday’s Market…..which took us 3 or 4 hours to walk through, went to a friends house to play dominoes and listen to Prairie Home Companion, and watched “The Last of the Mohicans”, the classic movie. Lastly…..he took me to the firing range for target practice. This was a first for me. It was sort of scary…..and loud…..but I knew my brother would be glad I did it…..so I did. If grocery stores went away and I had to forage for myself for food……I probably could, at least that’s my sense after my first target practice. The things we do for family!
Fort Wilderness
October 6th, 2008
I just returned from a glorious fall weekend in northern Wisconsin at Fort Wilderness. When they asked me to speak for their annual women’s retreat, I said yes not knowing exactly where Fort Wilderness was. It’s about a 6 hour drive from the Chicago area, where I live, and with each passing mile I felt more relaxed. About 4 1/2 hours into the drive the countryside started to change color. The leaves were almost at peak season in Rhinelander. The scenery really reminded me of Northern Maine where I’m originally from, so I felt right at home.
Enough about the scenery. I had a great time getting to know about 160 women who came to the retreat. I spoke on “unmasking” and what it looks like when we dare to live authentically. When you come away in a retreat setting and give God permission to move, He does, and we all enjoyed a weekend of spiritual significance.
Did I mention how good the food was at Fort Wilderness? Thanks to Janet and her kitchen crew……I worked really hard not to gain any weight while I was there. Thankfully there are a number of trails you can hike and other activities you can engage in that help work off the calories. If your church or family is looking for a great Christian Camp to attend in winter or summer, check out Fort Wilderness. Here’s their website: www.fortwildnerness.com
The Cubs
October 1st, 2008
I was so excited for the first game in the baseball play offs. My team, the Chicago Cubs, faced the Los Angeles Dodgers. This would not be another disappointing post season for the Cubs…..I just knew it wouldn’t. The Cubs led early. O.K. let me just cut to the chase. They lost 7 - 2. I confess that I went from hoping they’d make it to the World Series (actually believing they would) to hoping they wouldn’t get swept in the first round. I don’t want to be a fair weather fan……but my Cubbies are killin’ me!
