Blind Side
January 12th, 2010
My husband and I went to see the movie “Blind Side”. First of all, I highly recommend it. Sandra Bullock is great. She delivers some really funny lines. She has such wonderful comedic timing. All that aside, at about 4 or 5 minutes into the movie I was already on my 2nd kleenex. At one point I thought I was going to sob. I kept thinking(we were in a packed theater)”they’ll throw you out, people will be shushing you right out the door if you start sobbing.” So I sucked it up and kept dabbing my eyes. I won’t give the whole story away, but this tall, big, African American kid who is basically homeless gets taken in by a white Texas family. The family’s children go to the same Christian school as Michael, the main character. How he got into the Christian school is it’s own important part of the story.
I guess I was touched to see someone ‘do the right thing’, even do something scary and way outside their comfort zone. It made me ask myself if I would do the same thing if the need was there. Would I have the courage to stand up and open my home and change my life like that. “Blind Side” is based on a true story, which often makes the movie more engaging. It was definitely a feel good movie, but if you see it, you need to walk out asking questions of yourself and the Christian community you are a part of. I’d love to hear what you thought of the movie.

“The Blind Side” was very closely modeled after the book of the same name, and even lifts a great deal of dialogue directly from the book. A few situations are moved around in the chronology, but yes, the story is true.
That book is my husband’s and my life for the last eleven years. There are some differences (we’re not rich!!
), but God brought us the same situation. You never intend to get started in it, as Leanne Tuohy has said. It is a gradual thing. Often, I comment that if we knew where we would be today back at the beginning of things, we would have exclaimed “no way, God!!!” and ran the other way. Of course, He doesn’t do things that way.
Leanne has also said that Michael changed their life more than they changed his. I completely understand this comment. It is amazing how different our life is now; how many things we thought we had to have are long gone and how our priorities are so peculiar now, even to our believing friends.
One of these days, I’m hoping to meet Leanne, if only to say “thanks, I’m glad to know we weren’t the only ones to do something so crazy.” Hopefully God gets a big amount of glory. How could anyone do such a thing without being a believer; of course they are believers!
GOD is GREAT, my friend & I JUST spoke about this. Her adult kid is keeping her broke. WELL she just called & said WCRF is talking about how I’m a fool to let this go on. Please pray she will follow through. And it is effecting her walk with the Lord.
